Late 18th Century Neoclassical Chinse Reverse Painted Glass Picture

A magnificent late 18th century oval neoclassical Chinese reverse painted glass picture of Thais, leading
the destruction of the palace of Persepolis, the image taken from an engraving of the title, after the original
work by Joshua Reynolds, executed in 1781, this painting retains the original Chinese carved and gilded frame.

Thais was an Athenian courtesan who accompanied Alexander the Great on campaign when he conquered Persia.
She is reputed to have persuaded him to set fire to the Palace of Persepolis in 331 BC
